Find or Flop?

By far, one of my favorite activities is finding old and outdated clothes and modernizing them. Whether it’s thrift shopping or re-purposing hand-me-downs, I love to take vintage pieces and give them life again. In this post, I want to show you some of the pieces I’ve picked up and let you decide: is it a diamond in the rough or is it just a good try?

The Shirt with the Japanese Lady on the Back

This shirt is… shall we say… interesting. It is a statement piece meant for women in their sixties and it is originally from a store I would never willingly enter: Chico’s. When I first found it at Goodwill, I thought it was just a colorful button down. But the longer I looked at it, the more confused and in love I became with it. Instead of a button front, it has three hooks down the top half. From the front, it just looks orientally-inspired. But on the back, there is a giant Geisha. Among my friends, it has been dubbed my cultural appropriation shirt. I kind of love it, but I want to know what you guys think! Unique and interesting, or culturally insensitive?

DIY: Hideous Dress to Vintage Skirt

A couple months ago, my Mimi gave me an old dress she had just lying around, warning me that it was kind of old-fashioned. I took it out last week at 2 am to examine it and decide if it was wearable and realized that it was not my favorite look. It looked like a navy, velvet, short-sleeved blazer with giant pearl buttons sewn onto a linen floral skirt. Actually… that’s exactly what it was.

So at 2:15 in the morning, I bring out my school-supply scissors, and cut the top half off. How did I do? Vintage and classy, or better hidden in the back of my closet?

IT HAS GRAPES

My first time at Tampa Indie Flea, I was ecstatic to find at least three vintage vendors. I met an eccentric lady who tie dyes denim and searches for rad vintage pieces to sell at market and found this beautiful floral bomber on the rack between 70’s windbreakers. The pattern even has grapes on it. I love grapes. Isn’t it awesome? Or is it too extra?

I like the vintage skirt, it improved so much from what it was when you received it! I like your Geisha shirt too! The colors of the shirt harmonize beautifully, and your hair goes with its colors extremely well. Speaking of which, your hair looks beautiful! Those clothes look great on you!
